A 1981 Jean-Michel Basquiat painting is expected to set a record for the artist’s work at the Christie’s New York auction on Nov. 14th. The privately-held painting of a fisherman with his catch has been exhibited in every major retrospective. The work will be publicly exhibited in London, Paris and New York prior to the sale. Although the presale estimate is $20 million, Christie’s expects the final price to exceed that due to a strong market for Basquiat.

On only for several days (October 12-14), the upcoming exhibition entitled A Study Of Hands will be presenting to Melbourne works from a solid lineup of artists, many whom are based in Australia. Curated by Alexander Mitchell, the showing at the Backwoods Gallery includes Anthony Lister, Ashley Wood, Dave Kinsey, Haroshi, James Reka, James Greenaway, Kid Zoom, Mark Bode, Shohei Otomo, Twoone, Usugrow, and Yuske Imai. Seen above is an example of the thematic nature of the show from Kinsey, who offers up a variation of the imagery he used for his recent Obama Poster.

A truly cool art project

Human-shaped ice sculptures by Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo adorn the steps in front of the Faculty of Law at the University of Chile in Santiago. The installation, made of 1,000 small ice figures, is meant to symbolize climate change.

RIO DE JANEIRO.- Brazilian artist Fernando de la Rocque stands in front of some of their pieces of art at the La Cucharacha, a small alternative gallery in the stylish, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Some of Rocque’s pot-stained prints are being sold for $2,500 each. It takes him a week to complete a single print blowing about five joints’ worth of smoke onto a paper daily. AP Photo/Felipe Dana.

Mandela - this is absolutely brilliant!

DURBAN.- A sculpture of former South African President Nelson Mandela, is presented on August 4, 2012 in Howick, 90 kms South of Durban, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Mandela’s capture by the apartheid police. The unique sculpture designed by artist Marco Cianfanelli stands 10 metres tall and is made from 50 steel columns anchored in a concrete base. A modest monument at the site of his arrest was put up in 1996, but it will now be eclipsed by the monumental sculpture made up of 50 steel rods of between five and 10 metres high symbolizing the prison. July 23rd, 2012

The New York Times reports on the strange case of Robert Rauschenberg‘s Canyon and the legal dispute involving the heirs of Ileana Sonnabend, the famed art dealer and previous owner. Because Canyon features a dead bald eagle, the current owners are unable to sell the Rauschenberg due to the 1940 Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Although, due to its selling restriction, the work has been appraised at zero dollars, the IRS insists on taxing the family $29 million

Shades of Bosch?

It looks like Phlegm, like many street artists, is taking advantage of the good weather to get up on as many walls as he can. Not long after a series of Waterways, he now has a couple more to add, this time in Bantry, West Cork (Ireland). Included was this sweet submersible, structured after a fish, piloted by his characters.

Another booth to check out if you are lucky enough to be at Art Basel right now is the Jonathan LeVine setup at SCOPE. Japanese sculptor Haroshi has contributed three pairs of transparent shoes, fitted with feet sculpted from skateboards, a signature touch. Others who will be showing include Alex Gross, Brett Amory, Dylan Egon, Faile, Henrik Uldalen, How & Nosm, Jim Houser, Jordan Nickel (Pose), Marco Mazzoni, Natalia Fabia, Nicoletta Ceccoli, REVOK, Sit, Souther Salazar, Tara McPherson, Victor Castillo and Shepard Fairey.
